He contrasted more expensive Castrol GTX oil and cheaper options such as those offered by O’Reilly or Walmart.
He insisted many have the same approval by the United States‘ fuel watchdogs, as revealed in small print on the packaging.
Mr Kilmer issued the advice in a clip called “Stop buying this engine oil” which has since received more than 5,200 “likes”.
He is seen holding aloft bottles of Castrol GTX and O’Reilly motor oil, before telling viewers: “These are the same because they’re certified for gasoline engines by the American Petroleum Institute.
“They’re both excellent for your car – just read that back label.
“You’re only throwing your money away if you buy super-expensive stuff – the ones that they sell as generic have the same rating.”
He has more than 5million followers on YouTube – and his advice on engine oil has won praise in the comments below.
One viewer wrote: “I’ve been running cheap Walmart oil for years and I change it every 5,000 miles – never had any issues.”
Another posted: “It’s all mind games and manipulation with the brand names.”
He was also told “Love your videos, you have taught me so much” and “Yep, I’ve been doing this for years – works fine”.
But others said they preferred to spend more on premium engine oil for “peace of mind”.
One commenter said, “You get what you pay for”, while another responded to the video with: “If you are planning to keep your car for a long time this doesn’t seem to be a good idea.”
The new guidance comes after the mechanic recommended three things you need to make your car last twice as long, a trio of fluids which can can save you hefty repair bills.
He also advised on TikTok about an easy check which can guarantee that you’re not being ripped off when you buy a used car.
In other videos he has urged drivers not to buy cars from one particular country over quality concerns and warned against a common mistake when changing oil that could ruin your car.
